&quot;For your love is sweeter than wine.&quot; (SoS 1:2). Charles Spurgeon once preached
an entire sermon on that one line. Christ&#39;s love is better than wine because of
what it is not: it costs nothing, it never sours, it carries no impurities, and
you cannot take too much of it. It is better because of what it is: like wine,
it heals, it gives strength, it is a symbol of joy, and it exhilarates the soul.
Many disagree about how to read the Song of Solomon. Some hear only Jesus&#39; love
for His bride, the Church. Others hear only a poem to guide one husband and one
wife. It is a mistake to pick one when both are true. The book is &quot;inspired by
God&quot; (2 Tim. 3:16), and most Church fathers, Origen, Gregory of Nyssa, Ambrose,
and Augustine among them, read it as a love song between Jesus and His Church.
Chapter one opens with the bride and the groom expressing their mutual love,
and it offers seven lessons about Jesus&#39; love. Each one He gives to you, and
each one you owe your God-given spouse:

<li>Joy, the bride&#39;s excitement at the chance to be with her bridegroom (SoS 1:1-4).</li>
<li>Encouragement, offered when her brothers were angry with her and she felt vulnerable (SoS 1:5-7).</li>
<li>Fellowship, the path the shepherd gave her so she could find him (SoS 1:7-8).</li>
<li>Purity, the beauty her groom adorned her with at great price (SoS 1:9-11).</li>
<li>Honor, the bride&#39;s finest perfume poured out for her king (SoS 1:12-14).</li>
<li>Admiration, spoken plainly in both directions (SoS 1:15-16).</li>
<li>Support, a home framed with cedar beams that would not fall (SoS 1:16-17).</li>
</ul>
Solomon hardly seems the right messenger for godly love. God&#39;s law forbade a
king more than one wife (Dt. 17:17), and Solomon broke it 999 times (1 Kgs.
11:3). But Jesus can transform any sinner and use him for His glory, because
&quot;love covers a multitude of sins&quot; (1 Pet. 4:8). His love can transform any
broken marriage too.

Seven Things Jesus' Love Offers His Bride

&quot;Dead flies turn a perfumer&#39;s oil rancid, so a little foolishness is more
potent than wisdom and honor.&quot; (Ecc. 10:1). A single dead fly spoils the whole
jar. Solomon&#39;s warning is that a small, unchecked sin can undo a lifetime of
wisdom and reputation, the way a little leaven works through the whole lump of
dough (Gal. 5:9).
Solomon had looked back on his own life of rebellion and called everything
built &quot;under the sun&quot; without Yahweh futility, vapor, he·ḇel. Paul said
the same of his own accomplishments, counting them &quot;rubbish&quot; (Phil. 3:8). So
here Solomon writes in proverbs, urging us toward the wisdom of Yahweh. That
wisdom has a name. Jesus is wisdom incarnate (Jo. 1:1, 14), and through Him the
wisdom of God is available to everyone with faith (1 Cor. 1:24, 30).
Living your life by Jesus&#39; wisdom in a fallen world takes seven things:

<li>Vigilance, so a little sin never corrupts what Jesus made holy (Ecc. 10:1).</li>
<li>Diligence, to stay on His narrow path instead of trusting your own heart, which &quot;is more deceitful than all else&quot; (Jer. 17:9; Ecc. 10:2-3).</li>
<li>Submission to God&#39;s appointed authorities, unless they call you to evil (Ecc. 10:4-7).</li>
<li>Preparation, because &quot;one who digs a pit may fall into it.&quot; Count the cost before you build (Ecc. 10:8; Lk. 14:28).</li>
<li>Restraint, holding back rash words and instead speaking gracious ones (Ecc. 10:12-14).</li>
<li>Seeking Jesus&#39; guidance, since the fool&#39;s labor only wearies him (Ecc. 10:15).</li>
<li>Living for Him, not for pleasure or your own desires (Ecc. 10:16-20).</li>
</ul>
The fool &quot;demonstrates to everyone that he is a fool&quot; (Ecc. 10:3), while the
one who walks with Jesus can say, &quot;For to me, to live is Christ&quot; (Phil. 1:21).

Solomon said a live dog is better than a dead lion (Ecc. 9:4). The point is not
that the dog is noble. It is that while a creature still breathes it still has
hope, and the mightiest lion, once dead, has none.
Everything under the sun is he·ḇel, vapor that evaporates like smoke, and
Solomon faced the hardest fact about it: there is one fate for all. &quot;There is
one fate for the righteous and for the wicked&quot; (Ecc. 9:2). Abel was righteous,
and his name, Havel, is a near cousin of the very word Solomon used for
futility. His faith could not spare him a death at his brother&#39;s hand. No one
earns a way past the grave, &quot;for all have sinned&quot; (Rom. 3:23).
So how do you find meaning in a life you cannot lengthen? Solomon draws out
seven lessons, all of them pointing to Jesus, another name for Yahweh: (1)
faith, (2) hope, (3) grateful contentment, (4) service, (5) diligence, (6)
seeking His wisdom, and (7) trust.
<h2>Hope only lasts as long as it rests in Jesus</h2>
Hope is free to every living person, but apart from Jesus it ends at the grave
(Ecc. 9:4-6). It was Christ who &quot;brightened the dark valley,&quot; bringing life and
immortality to light. David knew where to anchor it while he still lived: &quot;My
soul, wait in silence for God alone, for my hope is from Him&quot; (Ps. 62:5).
<h2>Whatever your hand finds to do, do it now</h2>
Death stalks like a predator, catching people &quot;like fish caught in a treacherous
net&quot; (Ecc. 9:12). You cannot control the length of your life, so do not delay.
&quot;Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with all your might&quot; (Ecc. 9:10), and do
it &quot;as for the Lord and not for people&quot; (Col. 3:23).
Grateful contentment with what God provides, quiet wisdom over the world&#39;s loud

Solomon had more reason than anyone alive to trust in wealth, and the word he
kept reaching for was he·ḇel: &quot;futility,&quot; &quot;vanity,&quot; &quot;meaningless.&quot; It will
one day evaporate like smoke.
In the prior chapter, Solomon warned about the futility of wealth. In
Ecclesiastes 6 he continued with those warnings. Those who trust in their wealth
instead of Jesus will ultimately experience: (1) loss, (2) regret, (3) eternal
sorrow, (4) insatiable desires, (5) futile rebellion, (6) futile pride, and (7)
a futile lack of faith.
<h2>Avoid placing your trust in the gift instead of the Giver</h2>
Solomon watched God give a person &quot;riches, wealth, and honor, so that his soul
lacks nothing of all that he desires,&quot; and then withhold the opportunity to
enjoy any of it, while &quot;a foreigner enjoys them.&quot; (Ecc. 6:1-2). He knew the
pattern from his own house. &quot;As he came naked from his mother&#39;s womb, so he will
return as he came. He will take nothing from the fruit of his labor that he can
carry in his hand.&quot; (Ecc. 5:15). His son Rehoboam squandered the inheritance,
and Shishak of Egypt carried off the shields of gold that Solomon had made
(1 Kgs. 14:25-26).
<h2>Greed can never be satisfied</h2>
&quot;Sheol and Abaddon are never satisfied, nor are the eyes of a person ever
satisfied.&quot; (Prov. 27:20). Wealth cannot fill the appetite, and it will not hold
still long enough to try. &quot;Do not weary yourself to gain wealth; stop dwelling
on it. When you set your eyes on it, it is gone. For wealth certainly makes
itself wings like an eagle that flies toward the heavens.&quot; (Prov. 23:4-5).
<h2>One day with God is better than a thousand years without Him</h2>
&quot;For a day in Your courtyards is better than a thousand elsewhere.&quot; (Ps. 84:10).
Martin Luther saw what that does to our accounting: &quot;As I shall forsake my
riches when I die, so I forsake them while I am living.&quot;
The warning is not that wealth is evil. It is that wealth cannot bear the weight
of your hope. Place your hope in eternal life with Jesus, not in your wealth.
